Saving a Dog from a Semi Frozen Lake Occurred on January 5, 2018 / Midlothian, Virginia, USA Neighborhood kids knocked on my door and asked for help because a dog had fallen into our semi-frozen neighborhood pond. After attempting to reach the dog with a 30 ft ladder, Anthony Miller and I got the kayak from my garage and returned to the pond. Anthony got in the kayak and scooted along the ice until he reached the dog, Atlas, who was in distress and near complete exhaustion from trying to get out. Anthony used a noose from Animal Control to get the dog and drag him to the edge. He was placed in an emergency vehicle and given oxygen and warm blankets. After seizing several times, they tried to transport him to a nearby animal hospital. He stopped breathing twice and was given chest compressions by paramedics. When he arrived his temperature was so low it wouldn't even register on the thermometer. Under great care, Atlas made a full recovery and was reunited with his owner who had been desperately looking for him

Venezuela introduces martial law Caracas (AFP) – Venezuelans on Tuesday woke up to discover that the government-controlled price of corn flour — used to make corn patty arepas, a staple of local cuisine — has risen 900 percent. The socialist government of President Nicolas Maduro had kept the price of corn flour frozen for 15 months at 19 bolivares a kilogram (two pounds). But late Monday the government’s Superintendent of Fair Prices increased the price to 190 bolivares a kilo, or $19 at the government rate used for imports such as medicine and scarce food. Flour is one of the most scarce food basics, and the Venezuelan Association of Corn Flour Industrialists has been asking for a price increase, arguing that the low government-set price does not cover the cost of production. The Superintendent also said that the price of chicken would rise, up 13 times from 65 bolivares a kilo to 850 bolivares. The price of chicken had also been frozen since February 2015. Venezuela is enduring the world’s highest inflation rate: 180 percent in 2015, and a projected 700 percent for 2016. Officials said in early May that the price of controlled products would be updated to better reflect the cost incurred by producers. A “Law of Just Prices” sets a maximum profit margin of 30 percent for all goods and services. But in the case of food and medicine, a senior official said that profits are “compressed” to between 14 and 20 percent. Venezuela’s oil-dependent economy has been crippled by the plunge in price of petroleum on global markets.

The Woman Who Can’t Smile Elisa Relyea did not smile at her high school graduation, on her wedding day or when she held her new-born children for the first time. That's because Elisa, 42, has a rare medical condition that means she cannot smile or make hardly any facial expressions at all. Doctors believe Elisa has either Moebius Syndrome or a form of congenital facial paralysis which means her face is frozen in a single expression. Extensive surgery has allowed Elisa a very small amount of movement and she compensates with expressive hand gestures and inflections of her voice. She lives with her husband, Tim Relyea, 44, her daughter Emily, 1, and her son Caleb, 3, in Hyde Park, New York, who also has the condition.
Rescued lioness walks on grass for first time in her life Yuna, a lioness rescued from an abandoned house in Kiev after the start of the war, was living in a 3 x 4m enclosure with a concrete floor. Evacuated to a wildlife rescue centre, she was then bombarded by Russian missiles, leaving her severely traumatised and unable to stand. It took months of specialist care for Yuna to recover from her post-traumatic stress disorder. Overweight due to inactivity and poor diet, she slowly regained her strength. The first lioness rescued as part of the Big Cats in Crisis campaign , Yuna has regained her confidence in her new sanctuary. Having never walked on grass before, she began to explore her new surroundings with curiosity and determination.
