Stepper Motor Organ This is an experimental instrument I built that uses back-driven stepper motors to synthesize sound. The operational principle is that when stepper motors are back-driven, they induce a pseudo-sinusoidal alternating current. If this signal is amplified and connected to a speaker, you can listen to it as sound. The pitch of the sound is determined by the frequency of the wave, which depends on how fast the motor is back-driven. Higher speed will be a higher note. I thought this sound was interesting, so I wanted to make an instrument that used this mechanism to make music.
Seeing the Invisible I first saw a Schlieren imaging setup around ten years ago in Melbourne. I was immediately fascinated by the way I could see the warm air coming off my hand. I hadn't expected the currents to be moving that fast or to be so visible. This was a tricky setup to get right because alignment is very important and here I'm just working with what I had lying around the house mostly (plus the mirror). For the best Schlieren photography, making sure the mirror is stable is essential. I want to improve my setup so the mirror doesn't wobble back and forth too much creating the pulsing light and dark sections of this video.

This mirror changes the way women view themselves We are The Mrs., an all-female band from Austin, Texas. We recently asked women how they felt when they looked in the mirror. As you can see, we didn't like the answer, so we decided to help change it. "ENOUGH" looking in the mirror with such a critical eye. "ENOUGH" of that negative voice we hear in our heads. "ENOUGH" letting the world tell us who we should be. The Mrs.' debut single, "Enough", was written to help women see themselves with a less critical eye, and realize that they are "Enough" just the way they are. The Woman Who Can’t Smile Elisa Relyea did not smile at her high school graduation, on her wedding day or when she held her new-born children for the first time. That's because Elisa, 42, has a rare medical condition that means she cannot smile or make hardly any facial expressions at all. Doctors believe Elisa has either Moebius Syndrome or a form of congenital facial paralysis which means her face is frozen in a single expression. Extensive surgery has allowed Elisa a very small amount of movement and she compensates with expressive hand gestures and inflections of her voice. She lives with her husband, Tim Relyea, 44, her daughter Emily, 1, and her son Caleb, 3, in Hyde Park, New York, who also has the condition.
