Greece’s Impending Humanitarian Catastrophe: Breaking Borders
(0) | 07/03/2016 | Translate: An emergency EU summit takes place today aimed at getting Turkey to help Europe stem the flow of migrants into the continent. The refugee crisis is reaching breaking point in Greece with tens of thousands of people trapped there and around 2,000 more arriving each day.
Austria’s decision on February 19 to limit the number of people crossing its borders sparked the bottleneck, which escalated as other countries on the Balkan route into northern Europe followed suit. Now, the European Union has declared plans to formally close those borders to migrants.
As the European Union dissolves into heated disagreement over shared responsibility, VICE News correspondent Milène Larsson visits a tent city that’s cropped up at the Greek-Macedonian border. She speaks to some of the 13,000 people stranded there and to overwhelmed aid personnel who are warning a humanitarian disaster could be only days away.

- Greece’s Yanis Varoufakis: The Medicine of Austerity Is Not Working, We Need a New Treatment With the debt clock ticking, Greece is fast running out of money. The country has ordered all state bodies to place their cash reserves in the nation’s central bank, the Bank of Greece, as it struggles to stay afloat. Greece is suppose to receive the last installment of its bailout funds from European creditors, but the country’s new leftist, anti-austerity Syriza party has expressed concerns about its terms. The creditors are reportedly pressuring the country to restructure its labor market and curtail its pension system; Syriza has instead done the opposite by increasing pension payments to lower-wage workers. On Friday, eurozone finance ministers will decide whether to release emergency funds to Greece. Without the funds, Greece may default on its debt payments in coming weeks and put its membership in the eurozone at risk. We go to Athens to speak with Greek Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis.

By the end of his speech he was hailed and applauded by the Greek nationalists and he even drunk a beer and ate pork with them.

- Military food. NATO approved. MRE style. Greek MRE. This is some Greek military food a friend gave me. The cans hold a pretty nice meal. I like to gather this stuff and keep it just in case.
Please note, this MRE is used by paratroopers in Greece, 7 years have passed since i reviewed this so it might have changed. Greek MRE's don't need a lot of calories, especially since Greece doesn't fight outside of the country and the Greek soil is fertile enough to produce a lot of food in times of need. The good and sunny weather of Greece also plays a role so you won't see "heavy" MRE's here like Russia or France or US.
