Mortazavi is not just a fine player, he is an innovator. In this performance on Tombak, captured at WOMEX 2011, he demonstrates many of the techniques he has perfected to expand the palette of the Iranian hand drum. They allow for a uniquely melodic soundscape, and his playing held me for the full 40 minutes of his solo show…. no small feat!
