A giant sinkhole that opened up on a farm in New Zealand’s Bay of Plenty on Monday (April 30) has revealed a 60,000-year-old volcanic deposit.
Running along a fault line, the sinkhole opened after heavy rainfall in the area, the length is around 200 metres (656 feet) with a width of 20 to 30 metres (65-98 feet).
While sinkholes are common in the area, the size of this sinkhole has excited the science community with volcanologist Bradley Scott calling it “pretty spectacular.”
