A mussel Siliqua patula or 'sandpipe' digs the sand to hide. The Siliqua patula is a species of bivalve molluscs Pharidae family living in the East Coast of the United States.
Like other crustaceans kind of, the siliqua patula uses its 'foot' to dig and bury itself in the sand. The siphon serves for spitting sand. Bivalve molluscs hide from hunters, waves and high temperatures.
