For the first time, scientists at the University of Indiana recorded on video a bacterium 'grabbing' DNA and absorbing it to accelerate its evolution. This discovery may help fight bacteria that are resistant to antibiotics.
The researchers found one of the bacterial processes, which is 10.000 times thinner than a human hair, stretching and grabs DNA fragments from the environment. Then the bacteria integrated the fragment in his DNA. The process is known as “horizontal gene transfer”.
