In the 70's the circular canal that surrounded the old town of Utrecht for about 900 years, turned into a freeway. But in 2002 after a referendum to change the city, residents voted to return the canal to the site of the highway. Thus began the reconstruction of the old ring from canals, which was inaugurated on Saturday 12 September.
