Kumiko is a delicate and sophisticated technique for assembling wooden pieces without the use of nails. Thinly cut pieces of wood are carved with grooves, piercings and bruises, and then adjust separately using a planer, saw, hat and other tools for fine tuning. The technique was developed in Japan during the Asuka era (600-700 AD) and has since been perfected and passed on to generations of craftsmen who are passionate about the Kumiko tradition.
