During the annual Gostra festival in Malta, a traditional game dating back to the Middle Ages is organized. Competitors race to the top of a greased pole 20 meters above the harbor to retrieve a flag.

   This happens every year also in Leros in the Dodecanese. This celebration is called Alideia. As part of the maritime week.
