After 10 months of space travel, the DART probe hit its target by dropping more than 20.000 km/h in the asteroid Dimorphos located about 11 million kilometers from Earth. The purpose of the mission was to deflect the orbit of the asteroid in order to protect us from an asteroid heading towards our planet. The images were captured by the probe before impact with the approximately 160-meter-diameter asteroid. It will take a few weeks for scientists to confirm that the asteroid has indeed deviated from its orbit.
