Friday night, August 26, 2022 in Antigua, Guatemala, a group of hikers and their guides climbed Volcán de Fuego ('volcano of fire') about 200 meters from the summit when an explosion occurred. The volcano spewed a spectacular jet of lava, some pieces of which fell only about fifteen meters from the hikers. According to tour guides, these eruptions are not very rare but usually occur between 2 and 3 in the morning and not so early in the evening.
