The Harbin Ice and Snow Sculpture Festival is an annual event held in the city of Harbin, China since 1963. Harbin, it is the capital of Heilongjiang province and has a very cold climate in winter. The average temperature in January is -16,8 °C but can reach as low as -38,1 °C often. So, the population has developed a culture closely associated with snow and ice. The festival starts on January 5th and lasts for at least a month. The ice sculptures contain the traditional themes of Chinese folklore, such as traffic lights, up to more modern scenes that incorporate lasers. They are located in various parks in the city where guided tours are organized.
