Footage of how the self-heating meals offered on flights in Japan work. Pulling a string on the box, it starts a chemical reaction that heats up your meal in a matter of seconds. This chemical reaction takes place in a small pouch under the food, and contains three chemical elements: calcium oxide, aluminum powder and sodium bicarbonate. When the small string is pulled these elements are mixed with water, causing a vigorous chemical reaction that releases heat.
