November 23, 1996. A regular Ethiopian Airlines flight on the Addis Ababa route (Ethiopia) to Nairobi (Kenya) hijacked by three hijackers who entered the cabin and demanded that the flight be diverted to Australia. Despite the pilots' explanations that they do not have enough fuel for such a flight, the hijackers persisted in their request. The captain of the Boeing 767-200ER managed to divert the flight to the Comoro Islands (they are located between Mozambique and Madagascar), where he wanted to land, which the hijackers did not allow and so he circled the area until the plane ran out of fuel. It then attempted an emergency landing on the surface of the Indian Ocean, while the co-pilot fought the hijackers. Despite trying to land parallel to the waves, the plane spun, which caused its destruction. 125 of the 175 passengers died in the accident. Oddly, part of the passengers (60 to 80 people) they died because of that, despite instructions, they opened their life jackets while still inside the cabin, which did not allow them to get out and they were drowned. Both the captain and the first officer survived.
