The process of loading a Colt Army 1860 revolver

The Colt Army Model 1860 is a 0 caliber revolver,44, used during the American Civil War, and was manufactured by Colt's Manufacturing Company in 1860. It was used by the US Cavalry, infantry, the artillery troops and the navy.

Loading the gun was a somewhat time-consuming process, with each of the six chambers in the rotating cylinder being filled from the front of the cylinder. A measured amount of gunpowder is poured into each chamber. Then, a leaden or conical ball, is placed in the chamber opening and seated by pressing it firmly in with the rotating loading lever fixed under the barrel of the revolver.
