The 'ultrasonic bang' (sonic boom) is a sound phenomenon that occurs when an object (like an airplane) it travels faster than the speed of sound in air, which is about 1235 km/h under normal conditions (at 20 °C at sea level). This phenomenon is the result of an object overcoming air pressure waves, which would otherwise spread in front of him and 'announce' his presence.
