Valencia and the south-east of Spain were hit by catastrophic floods. At the end of October 2024, the amount of precipitation corresponding to the annual average fell in the region during eight hours. According to available information, the floods claimed more than 200 lives, most of them coming from the Valencia area. Many people are still missing and rescue teams are continuing to search. The floods caused significant damage to infrastructure, including destroyed roads, bridges and buildings. Many areas were left without electricity and drinking water supplies. The Spanish government has deployed thousands of soldiers and rescuers. In addition, thousands of volunteers took part in the restoration work with shovels, buckets and brooms, who came to the aid of their compatriots. This event is considered one of the worst natural disasters in Spain in recent decades.
