The experience of landing an A319 at the most dangerous airport in the world, the airport of Paro city in Bhutan. The video was shot by a GoPro in the cockpit. Paro airport is often cited as one of the most dangerous airports in the world. Several factors contribute to this reputation:
-Mountain Environment: The airport is located at an altitude of 2,235 meters and is surrounded by mountains that reach up to 5,500 meters. This makes approach and landing extremely difficult, as pilots can only see the runway at the last moment after navigating the valleys.
-Small and narrow runway: Paro's runway is only 2.000 meters and 30 meters wide, which is significantly smaller than usual international standards. This limits the margin of error for landings and takeoffs.
-Weather conditions: The weather conditions in Paro can be unpredictable, with frequent strong winds and turbulence, making landing and takeoff maneuvers even more difficult.
-Pilot requirements: Because of these challenges, only a limited number of pilots are certified to land at Paro. These pilots must have special training to perform manual landings without radar assistance.
In the video, the aircraft is seen navigating the narrow valley surrounded by the towering peaks of the Himalayas. The pilot performs the precise turns and maneuvers required for a successful landing on this small runway.
