Nervous System has created the first dress with Kinematics, their unique 4D printing system that creates complex, foldable forms composed of articulated modules. The Museum of Modern Art has acquired the dress along with the software that created it for their permanent collection. Composed of thousands of interlocking components, the dress was 3D printed as a single folded piece at the Shapeways factory in New York City and required no assembly. This was made possible by Nervous Systems’ Kinematics system which combines design generation, customization, and simulation to enable the production of large flexible structures by 3D printing.

kids clothing expands to fit as children grow This children's clothing line designed by Royal College of Art graduate Ryan Mario Yasin has a pleat system that lets garments stretch to fit even after growth spurts. Yasin created Petit Pli after buying clothes for his nephew which no longer fit by the time they turned up. He used his background as an aeronautical engineer to devise a set of permanent folds that let clothes 'unpack' when pulled, as children get bigger. The collection features waterproof and windproof outwear, sized to fit children aged 6 to 36 months. The designer hopes that by creating kids clothes that last longer, this will help towards reducing the huge amount of waste generated by the garment industry.

This system, on display at the Early Television Museum in Ohio, was built as a demonstration unit using a vintage mirror screw scanning device and modern LEDs and electronic circuitry.
