A programmable robot aged 240 years

The most amazing of the surviving 18th century 'automata'., is “the scribe” and was made by watchmaker Jaquet Droz in Switzerland. The 'scribe' works to this day, and was the inspiration for the movie 'Hugo'. The complex mechanism gives life to the little boy, and can be programmed to write any word or phrase. Other structures of Jaquet Droz, could paint or play the piano.
