On July 19, 2015, the boat's coast guard Cutter Stratton American reversed course a little improvised submarine that was constructed by drug dealers in southern Mexico. The authorities arrested four men who were inside the submarine, containing 275 cocaine blocks, total weight of about 7,3 tons and worth 164 million euros.
The submarines are becoming increasingly popular means for transporting drugs, and used quite a bit in recent years. It is difficult to detect with radar, and it is mostly hand-made, away from prying eyes and aerial surveillance satellites. This particular one has been designated as a “Blue Semi-Submarine”, floating just below the waterline, with only the cockpit to protrude from the water. With an estimated construction cost of one million euros, the submarine is equipped with a valve that allows full immersion, when it is established that 'the mission' is in danger.
