A Spanish cancer patient received sternum and ribs from titanium, which were designed by medical device company Anatomics in Melbourne Australia and printed using a 3D printer.
Suffering from sarcoma of chest wall (a type of cancerous tumor that grows around the ribcage), the 54chronos man needed replacement of the sternum and a piece of rib cage. This part of the breast is notoriously difficult to recreate with prosthetics, due to the complex geometry and planning required for each patient.
So the patient's surgical team felt that a fully customizable 3D printed sternum and ribs were the best choice.
