The whirlpool of death

Not to be lost, the ants follow the pheromones that are deposited on the ground by other ants of their colony. But there is a rare phenomenon, where the ants start spinning continuously around the same point, exhausted and finally to die. It is called 'The vortex of death' and this phenomenon was observed for the first time in 1944 by the American scientist Theodore Schneirla.

The Schneirla explained that this unusual behavior could be caused when some ants separate from the main flock and end up next to one another without any destination. An Ant by itself does not have the intelligence to choose the shortest path in a complex environment, and so all together tend to follow one another in a perpetual cycle.

Why do sheep, fish, peacocks, deer, and other animals do the death march. And how often is this continuous circular walk observed in this world?
