When fused copper dropped onto the ice melts too fast at its core, while at the same time the metal rapidly solidifies at the contact points creating a 'plug' on the surface of the ice. The pressure of the steam is rising so fast in ice Center, that creates a large explosion.

     I do not seem so stupid why he had taken basic precautions. Maybe he didn't know what would happen but certainly didn't expect something.
