Thursday 11 February 2016 16:30, a historic moment for Science took place, in the first official statement by the detection of gravitational waves on Earth. Albert Einstein described the existence of these waves in June 1916, that is, 100 years earlier, as a consequence of the theory of general relativity published in 1915. at that time, It was impossible to visualize this phenomenon with existing technology.
Indeed, the gravitational waves are distortions of space-time that have infinitesimal impact on Earth, and could identify only with huge amplifiers and detectors such as LIGO Observatory in the USA, or the GEO 600 detector-in Germany. But how it all started; Over a billion years ago, in a distant galaxy, merged two giant black holes. This cosmic conflict shook the fabric of spacetime, spreading the energy around three Suns in the form of gravitational waves that are sent to the edge of the universe at the speed of light.
On September 14, these waves reached Earth. On Wednesday, February 10, 2016, the Executive Director of the LIGO Observatory, David Reitze, announced that it has identified for the first time these gravity waves, but this was not known until the next day at an official press conference led by scientists from Caltech, the MIT and the LIGO. This observation confirms the hypothesis put forward by Einstein in his theory of general relativity.
